DNF: The Switch by Dawn Pendleton and Andrea Heltsley

The Switch
The Switch by Dawn Pendleton and Andrea Heltsley
Honor and Faith haven’t switched places since they were kids. When Honor begs her twin sister to go on a date with her boyfriend, Cameron, Faith reluctantly agrees. The problem is that she lets things go too far. Now Honor and Cameron have broken up and he won’t stop calling Faith, claiming he felt something more for her. The scary thing is, Faith felt it too. The problem, however, is the one rule that sisters and best friends abide by: don’t date their ex's.
Honor has her own problems. Breaking it off with Cameron was the right thing to do, but now his best friend, Parker, won’t leave her alone. The more time they spend together, the more Honor starts to heal. Suddenly, Honor sees Parker as more than just a friend who cares – and she wants more.
Neither sister wants to complicate things further and cross those boundaries, but they can’t stop their emotions for the guys in their lives. Turns out, the switch is the one thing that has changed them forever.

I wrote a post about negative reviews, and how I don't review if I don't finish, and a very wise blogger pointed out that knowing what a blogger doesn't like can be valuable to publishers and authors too. I think that it also helps my readers build trust that I am not just slapping good ratings on everything I read. I have a knack for picking what I will lack based on synopsis and reviews, but that even fails. Then another blogger mentioned she did a did not finish post and I thought it was a great idea. So, here we go:

For me, Honor and Faith proclaimed to be so different but their inner monologue sounded much the same, and until there was dialogue I could forget whose head I was in. And, speaking of the dialogue, it didn't sound natural in my head, they sounded older, and it just didn't flow like normal conversation to me.
Also, they claimed they were best friends, but it seemed like they were dropping bitch, slut, and always qualifying mean statements with "but I love her anyways"
The premise was really cute, but I just couldn't connect with the characters and Cam didn't hold the appeal for me.

That isn't to say that the writing is poor or the characters are poorly constructed, it's personal on my end.
I'd love to see if you have a great review of any of this books and what you loved about it.

  1. I totally understand your feelings. I've recently read a book where I have similar problems. The two characters which are supposed to be different ended being the same. Great review, Brandi :)

  5. How can you be best friends and go to far with your sister's boyfriend? Yeah, I can see your trouble with this one.

You know, the only time I get caught with DNF or books I don't like are usually tour books and there is generally a rule about if you don't like it you have to do a promotional post. But you are right to do it. And you had valid reasons for not liking it. In your opinion, and that's what it's all about!

  6. It's to bad this one didn't work for you. The plot/summary sounds really cute. But it also sounds very character driven which means it needs strong characters with individual personalities.

    Better luck next time.

  7. I'm sorry this one didn't work for you! I hate when I can't tell which character is which in a novel, and if you can't connect with the characters, it's really tough to enjoy the story. Thanks for sharing why you DNF'd!

  8. The premise sounds interesting but if the two sisters were too similar and you couldn't tell whose head you were in, I would have some problems with it too. I also hate that they called each other bitch and slut but then did they whole "lol jk, I love her thing." That would drive me insane! I think I'll have to pass on this
