Cydni Hazard by L.S Hullinger
Twelve-year-old Cydni Hazard wants two things in life: to be able to use her empathic abilities to connect with her deceased mother, and to become a professional paranormal detective. In order to get what she wants, she feels she must learn as much as possible from her spiritually gifted Aunt Ettie, all the while keeping her supernatural talents hidden from her skeptical father. But no matter where Cydni goes, the spirit world hunts her down, and brings stray cats with mystical messages that she must decipher to keep her life on a somewhat normal keel. That’s not easy when her empathic nature leads her into unfamiliar territory and behavior. She never knows where she’ll be going, what she’ll be doing and who will be influencing her, guiding her to unravel the latest paranormal mystery. So when she spends a week at Aunt Ettie's new house and learns the small town of Blue Star claims to have a haunted pond, Cydni is spiritually led to discover the truth.

Alibi's Ghosts
by L.S Hullinger

Alexandra ‘Alibi’ Vernon is the eleven-year-old daughter of a psychic medium whose behavior is repeatedly influenced by kids from the Other Side. From building sub sandwiches in her sleep to sneaking into a stranger's attic, Alibi has her innocence challenged on a regular basis. Since her mother is fairly new at medium work, she only schedules two readings a week.
However, this particular week, she accidentally schedules five readings, five days in a row. During this time, each child from the Other Side has a mysterious clue for Alibi to unravel, and she begins to notice each clue is connected in some way with the other readings. With a bit of ghostly charade playing, lots of trouble dodging, and the help of her deceased relatives: Grandpa Edgar and Cousin Kyle, along with her living but scaredy-cat best friend, Daisy, Alibi is able to solve the mystery and help all five grieving parents simultaneously.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
For Alibi’s Ghosts: What’s it like to play charades and solve mysteries with ghosts on a daily basis? Ask eleven-year-old Alexandra “Alibi” Vernon.
For Cydni Hazard, Empathic Detective: Ever feel like you are being intuitively led to do something? Are you curious enough to discover why? Empathic detective, Cydni Hazard is.

--How did you get the idea for the story?   When I was a child I was extremely fascinated with big old houses, ghost stories, and the board game Clue. So, I thought it would be fun to combine those things in stories for middle-grade readers.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with? In Alibi’s Ghosts, I would love to have dinner with Alibi because I think she would be a lot of laughs. I would not like to have dinner with her cousin Kyle as I would probably end up with meat hidden in my food (being that he is a prankster) and I have been a vegetarian since 1991.
In Cydni Hazard, I would love to have dinner with Aunt Ettie because she would probably serve the best vegetarian meals I’ve ever eaten and also because she has a good sense of humor. I would not like to have dinner with Nick’s grandfather as he would probably complain the entire time that the food did not come from his produce place.
--What are some of your favorite books? Some of my favorite books are Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story, Chasing Redbird, Waiting for Normal, Ruby Holler, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter, Odd Thomas, Larkrise to Candleford and The Help. Do you still have much time to read?  Yes, I always try to find time to read. Even if it’s a writer’s magazine or a short story collection.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates? Yes, I’ve completed another novel but it has not yet been formatted for Kindle. If you’d like to read a synopsis, please check out my ‘coming soon’ website page: http://www.lshullinger.com/Coming-Soon.html

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?  I would pick Lark Rise to Candleford because I love the era, the simple life and the beauty of the land and friendship of the people.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?  I usually have a cup of coffee and peanut M&Ms while I write. Most times a bag of Lays chips are sitting on my desk also. I don’t usually listen to songs while I’m writing unless it is a period piece to keep me in the frame of mind of the times. But, I did, however, read tons of R.L. Stine books during the day, and watch Tru Calling each and every night prior to writing both books.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?  I would love to have the power to be able to instantly cheer up someone who is sad with one magical word.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?   I enjoy creating greeting cards for the Hallmark online contests. (I haven’t won yet, but remain hopeful J)  I also love spending time with my family, and especially having scavenger hunts with my four-year-old granddaughter, Gwendolyn.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?  If you are interested in writing (I wrote my first short story in the fifth grade) save everything that you write because you never know when an opportunity to present it will occur. If you’re a reader and you enjoyed my books, please feel free to contact me from my website and let me know which parts were your favorites.

Lightning round: this or that?
Vanilla or chocolate?  Most definitely chocolate!
Edward or Jacob?  Edward
Hockey or soccer?  Soccer
Ebook or paper?  Even though my own two books are Ebooks for now, I’ve always preferred paper. (though Alibi and Cydni have given me cause to make friends with my Kindle J)
Salty or sweet? Most definitely sweet!
Beach or mountains? Mountains. I’m from Virginia and loved going camping with my family.
Phone call or email? Email
Early bird or night owl?  Night owl.
Dog or cat? Cat.
Messy or neat? Neat home. Messy writing room.
Ninjas or pirates? Pirates

  5. Thanks for the giveaway, these both sound really good! I would love to read them and then see if they are ones I could pass to my niece, who is 10 years old and takes after her auntie (me!) with her voracious reading habits! Loved the interview - I, too, was a huge fan of ghosts and all things paranormal growing up. And I would beg, beg, BEG my family to play Clue with me all the time!! They didn't always oblige.... but when they did, we always had such a great time. Thanks for bringing back that memory!
